On Aug. 25, 2026, Student Council put on the first Big Brother/Big Sister(Big Bro/Big Sis) event. This event takes place every quarter for the elementary students. Each student council member or a “big” gets paired up with one elementary student or a “little”. Together they get to perform different fun activities. Yet, Big Bro/Big Sis is not just about fun events. One of the advisors for Student Council, Brooke Lanik, said that, Big Bro/Big Sis gives younger students a chance to form positive, meaningful relationships with older students.
“Big Bro/Big Sis gives students the opportunity to develop positive relationships with older peer role models. The program also provides younger students with a safe, supportive environment where they can develop social skills, build confidence, and form connections with others. We hope these relationships will help students feel supported and connected within our school community,” said Lanik.
Each elementary student gets chosen through a teacher recommendation. Teachers may recommend students who would benefit from an older peer role model. The Student Council will also try to build those connections outside of Big Bro/Big Sis. This could include the bigs spending a free period with their little or leaving a fun note on their locker.
During their first Big Bro/Big Sis activity the bigs and littles got to complete a scavenger hunt around town. They had three stops to make before heading to the final destination. At the final destination, the students got an ice cream cone from Smitty’s. Afterward, the participants headed back to the school and played a game of kickball.
In the future, the Student Council has a variety of more fun events planned. This includes, Nerf Wars, Sardines, mat ball, decorating cookies and playing board games.
